Let us start this on a high note.
I caught the new Channal 4 show The Big Art Project; several cities across the UK are having a public sculpture made, a great idea. however there are some problems when it comes to letting the public deside what art is.
What got me upset about the world was when the man and woman commissioning the work for Newham, east London displayed what can only be discribed as Abstractphobia. They have a prime space for a public work, on top of a huge manmade hill created out of poison, next to a moterway and commanding wonderful views of the local area. They themselves abmit not knowing alot about art, however they seem to know what makes "good art"; figrative, safe, and boring.
